Strategic position of Turkey on the Eastern Mediterranean energy security in the context of copenhagen school

Energy is one of the important elements that determine the relations of states with each other in international relations. With the energy discoveries in the region, the Eastern Mediterranean region has gained a new dimension in the international system. Geostrategic and geopolitical importance of the Eastern Mediterranean has increased due to the discovery of energy reserves in recent years. In the context of historical developments, energy rivalry in the Eastern Mediterranean region has been examined. In this master's thesis, structured based on the approaches of Copenhagen School. In this context, the concept of energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean will be analyzed in the Copenhagen School. The main problematic of this study is what are the main reasons for Turkey's securitization of energy in the Eastern Mediterranean. For this reason, the threats faced by Turkey regarding energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean are presented. In this thesis, in which the Securitization Theory is brought to the fore, it is questioned that the theory, in which foreign policy analysis is made, can explain Turkey's securitization processes. The thesis analyzes the challanges confronted Turkey's energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean. Using the theoretical framework provided by Securitization Theory, this study analyzes the discourses used by Turkey during the securitization process of Eastern Mediterranean. In this reason, in this study, the speeches of the political elites which influence the political decisionmaking mechanism of Turkey have been discussed in the framework of the security approaches of the Copenhagen School.
