Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to examine the effects of music and inhaler aromatherapy applied to patients who have undergone coronary angiography on pain severity, anxiety and fear levels. The study was conducted as a randomized experimental study with a pre-test post-test control group. The study was carried out with 128 individuals who were admitted to the Coronary Angiography Unit of Fırat University Hospital and Fethi Sekin City Hospital between November 2022 and June 2023 for coronary angiography, who met the criteria and whose consents were obtained. The patients in the music group listened to rast maqam classical Turkish music with headphones for 10 minutes in the waiting room before the procedure and continuously during the procedure. In the inhalation aromatherapy experimental group, three drops of lavender oil were dropped on sponge and the patients smelled it for 5 minutes before the procedure and continuously during the procedure. The patients in the music and inhalation aromatherapy experimental group listened to music for 10 minutes and were applied lavender oil inhaler aroma for 5 minutes before the procedure and continuously during the procedure. No intervention was made to the patients in the control group. "Patient Information Form", "Visual Analog Scale-Pain (VAS-P)", "Visual Analog Scale-Anxiety (VAS-A)", "Visual Analog Scale-Fear (VAS-F)", "State Anxiety Scale (SAS)" were used to collect data. Percentage, mean ± standard deviation, median, Shapiro Wilk test of normality, analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-square test, and mixed order analysis of variance were used for data analysis. In the study, when the differences between the groups were examined, no significant difference was found in the mean scores of VAS-P,VAS-F, VAS-A and SAS before the procedure (p>0.05). A significant difference was found in the mean scores of VAS-P, VAS-F, VAS-A and SAS between the intervention groups and the control group after the procedure (p<0.05). As a conclusion, it was found that music and inhaler aromatherapy decreased the level of pain intensity, anxiety and fear in patients who underwent coronary angiography. In line with these results, it is suggested that the use of music and/or inhaler aromatherapy should become widespread during coronary angiography.
