Using nanoparticle loaded activated carbon in Cr (VI) reducing treatment plants increasing Cr (VI) removal performance

In this study, it is aimed to increase the chromium removal performance by passing the effluent water through the latest nanoparticle loaded activated carbon filters in waste water treatment plants that provide Cr+6 removal by reduction as a result of chemical reactions. Activated carbon filters coated with silver nanoparticles were placed at the outlet of the neutralization tank, which is the last stage of the treatment plant and the chromium removal efficiency obtained by passing the effluent water through standard activated carbon filters and the removal efficiency of nanoparticle filters were compared. In the study, in order to examine the emissions such as pH effect, contact time and amount of adsorbent and to determine the necessary conditions, different contact conditions (30.min., 60.min., 90.min.) were used at different pH (pH = 6-8-10) waste water samples were taken with different adsorbent amounts (9 kg, 12 kg, 15 kg). While pH adjustments are made, the discharge limits of the organized industrial zone to which the treatment plant is connected (pH= 6-10) are taken into account, while the amount of adsorbent is determined, with reference to standard 15 kg activated carbon filters, variable adsorbent amounts are used, with a maximum of 15 kg and a minimum of 9 kg. 30 minute periods were chosen as the contact time. In the results of the wastewater analysis, it was observed that the silver nanoparticle coated activated carbon filters provided the best removal efficiency in the 90th minute at 15 kg filters and at pH=6. This proves that the removal efficiency is directly proportional to the contact time and the amount of adsorbent, and inversely proportional to the pH. When all these analysis results are evaluated, it has been observed that filters with silver nanoparticles provide an average of %50 better chromium removal compared to standard A.C filters.In addition, the lifetime of the filters was compared with the waste water analyzes taken periodically (with an interval of 3 weeks). With the data obtained here, it is revealed that nanoparticle coated filters can be used for 2 times longer than standard activated carbon filters. As a result of these comparisons, it has been observed that great advantages can be achieved in chrome removal with a low investment cost.
