Abstract (EN)
Chronic renal failure is a non-contagious disease with a high global mortality rate, but its prevalence is increasing day by day. CKD has many causes and is a complex process. Although there are some diagnostic indicators of CKD, they are not sufficient for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Gal-3 is a lectin found in various organs and tissues, regulating cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, inflammation, phagocytosis, exocytosis and fibrosis. Studies suggest that gal-3 will be a new biomarker and a therapeutic treatment method in CKD. In this study, we aimed to show the relationship between gal-3 levels and the prognosis of CKD and inflammation. The control group of our study consisted of 30 volunteer patients who applied to the internal medicine outpatient clinic of Kafkas Research and Practice Hospital and did not have hepatic disease, autoimmune disease or DM. The patient group was formed by 60 volunteer patients who did not have autoimmune disease or hepatic disease and applied to the nephrology clinic of Kars Harakani State Hospital and were treated in the dialysis clinic. The ACR levels of the patient and control groups were determined with the data obtained from the hospital information system. The patient group was divided into subgroups as macroalbuminuria and microalbuminuria according to the ACR value. Gal-3 and IL-33 levels were analyzed with the ELISA method. Correlation analysis was performed between Gal-3, IL-33 and biochemical parameters. ROC analysis was performed for the diagnostic adequacy of the tests. As a result of our study; the serum gal-3 level of the patient group was found to be significantly lower than the control group. The gal-3 level of the microalbuminuria group was found to be significantly lower than the control group. When grouped according to GFR, no significant difference was obtained in the advanced stage CKD patient group. A weak correlation was found between ACR, GFR and CRP parameters and gal-3 levels. There was a significant moderate correlation between gal-3 and IL-33. The results of our study led us to think that serum gal-3 levels may be effective in the pathogenesis of the disease in CKD patients and may also be evaluated as a diagnostic biomarker. However, since the decrease in gal-3 levels in advanced CKD patients was not significant and there was no relationship with dialysis duration, it showed that the use of gal-3 levels in monitoring the prognosis of the disease would not be clinically useful.
