TNF alpha and TGF beta gene polymorphisms among Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseaase (COPD) patients

Abstract (EN)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseaase (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease with some significant extrapulmonary effects that may contribute to the severity in individual patients.There have been many studies, primarily on TNF alpha and TGF beta gene polymorphisms, conducted on the genetic risk factors of COPD. Even though, TNF alpha and TGF beta gene polymorphisms were thought to be associated with COPD, these results are controversial. In this regard, our goal was to evaluate the TNF alpha and TGF beta gene polymorphisms of COPD cases in our region.In our study, 83 COPD patients and 35 healthy controls included and the relationship between tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-?) G-308A promotor polymorphism, transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) C-509T promotor polymorphism, TGF- ß T869C polymorphism and COPD were evaluated by using PCR-RFLP method.As a result, no significant statistical difference were observed between the genotype prevalances of COPD patients and healthy controls (p=0.343, 0.096, 0.207, respectively). And also, allele frequencies did not differ between COPD patients and healthy controls (p=0.470, 0.071, 0.110, respectively).In conclusion, no association was found between COPD and mentioned polymorphisms in the first study conducted at Turkish population.
