Evaluation of the effects of regularly used drugs on the physical properties of restorati̇ve materials in children with chronic systemic disease

This in vitro study was aimed to compare the effects of frequently prescribed pediatric drugs on the surface properties and color change of dental restorative materials. A total of 525 disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 7 different dental restorative materials (FU; Filtek Ultimate, AC; ACTIVA Bioactive-Restorative, AD; Admira Fusion X-Tra, BII; Beautifil II, EQ; Equia Forte, FII; Fuji II, FIX; Fuji IX) by using Teflon molds with a diameter of 10 mm and a height of 2 mm (n=75). After the initial measurements, the restorative materials were immersed in 5 pediatric drug solutions containing different active ingredients (n=5): Aerius (antihistamine), Atarax (anxiolytic), Ferro Sanol B (antianemic), Keppra (antiepileptic), Ventolin (bronchodilator). The immersion cycle was performed 3 times a day for 2 minutes up to four weeks. Measurements were repeated for all samples and the data were analyzed statistically. Pediatric drugs significantly increased the surface roughness values of BII and FIX groups (p<0.05). Ventolin most affected the surface roughness of the restorative materials (p<0.05). The microhardness of restorative materials immersed in Aerius, Atarax, Keppra, and Ventolin solutions decreased statistically significantly (p<0.05). Pediatric drugs significantly decreased the microhardness values of FU, BII, EQ, and FII groups (p<0.05). In terms of color change, Ferro Sanol B most affected the restorative materials. The highest ΔE value was obtained from the FII group (p<0.05). The obtained results indicate that pediatric drugs can interact with restorative materials and affect the color stability and surface properties of the material.
