The place of bektashism in the lifestyle of Kirşehi̇r Abdals

Kırşehir, an important cultural hub in Anatolia, is renowned for its Abdal communities. The Abdal tradition, a custodian of a significant cultural heritage, presents itself as a vital cultural and religious phenomenon with various facets. This study aims to elucidate the traces of the Bektashi tradition among the Abdals residing in Kırşehir. The research examines the influence of the Bektashi tradition on the Abdals' religious motifs found in their music, beliefs, practices at different life stages, natural events, fire and animal cults, places of visitation, as well as their worship practices and behaviors. The primary data sources for this research are the Abdals with whom interviews were conducted. The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing the interview method. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis. Although we do not perceive the beliefs and practices of the Abdals as constituting a distinct religion or sect, it is observed that, despite the increasing trend of Sunnification influenced by the surrounding society, they still retain profound traces of the Bektashi tradition, as evidenced by certain iconic photographs and objects found in their homes. The findings of the study reveal that elements of the Bektashi tradition are present in the lifestyle of the Kırşehir Abdals. This research investigates the changes in the belief systems and cultural structure of the Kırşehir Abdals, attributing these changes to the influence of Sufi movements, particularly Bektashism, while also considering the impact of the Sunni society in which they reside.
