The place of cubism art movement in the fashion world

Fashion, fed from various sources, has been influenced by art movements especially in the recent years. The cubism art movement examined in the research represents the understanding of art, based on the principle of breaking painted objects or figures into geometric shapes from different angles by applying the collage technique. The subject of the research is the impact of art on clothing, the effect of cubism on clothing designs, women's clothing designs and a women's clothing design application inspired by cubism. The aim of the research was to investigate the place of cubism in fashion, the interaction between cubism and fashion, and particularly to implement a women's clothing design with the influence of cubism. The importance of the research can be found in the adaptability of the basic principles of cubism to the clothing industry and the realization of an original clothing design with the help of the collage technique as well as the ability to reflect the geometric fragmentation technique on the clothing patterns, and to offer solutions such as creating a fabric pattern found in cubist works. Its limitation is women's clothing designs, inspired by the basics of cubism, and a women's clothing design practice done by the researcher in line with it. In the method of the research, a literature review suitable for qualitative research was applied, then studies, books, journals, articles and internet resources in this field were examined. After the analysis of the documents obtained, the conducted research was supported by related visual sources. Upon the examination of particular women's clothing designs applied by the researcher, a women's clothing design was drawn and colored in the Adobe Illustrator CC 2017 program, then it was brought to life with a variety of patterns and sewing techniques. In some designs, the geometric fragmentation technique, one of the main principles of cubism, was reflected on the patterns of the clothing, while in the others, different materials, other than newspaper clippings and fabrics giving the impression of a painting, were used as part of the collage technique in cubism. In many designs, patterns were created with that inspiration and reflected on fabric surfaces. Accordingly, a women's clothing design application was conducted to the fabric surfaces and patterns of the design with reference to the principles of cubism. In the conclusion of the research, it was found out that cubism inspired the realization of women's clothing designs.
