The impact of postoperati̇ve early neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte rati̇os on survi̇val in patients undergoing lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer

THE IMPACT OF POSTOPERATİVE EARLY NEUTROPHIL-LYMPHOCYTE AND PLATELET-LYMPHOCYTE RATİOS ON SURVİVAL IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING LOBECTOMY FOR NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER Introduction and Objective: Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. In the early stages of non-small cell lung cancer, surgical treatment is implemented. Post-treatment prognosis and survival times vary depending on various factors. This study aims to identify factors that may have a predictive effect on survival and to evaluate the significance of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio. Materials and Methods: A retrospective evaluation was conducted on 257 patients who underwent surgery for non-small cell lung cancer at Akdeniz University Hospital's Thoracic Surgery Clinic between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2022. Data were retrieved from the hospital's information management system. Results: The majority of the patients included in the study were in the early stages of non-small cell lung cancer, with an average survival time of approximately 5.8 years. Univariate analyses showed that female patients, non-smokers, and those with upper left lobe tumors had better survival rates. In contrast, large cell carcinoma, advanced stages, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, pathological lymph node involvement, high postoperative neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and low postoperative hemoglobin levels were associated with poorer survival. Multivariate analyses indicated that an increase in postoperative neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, a decrease in postoperative hemoglobin, male gender, and hypertension were independent predictive factors for survival. Conclusion: In non-small cell lung cancer, it is appropriate to use postoperative neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and hemoglobin levels in conjunction with gender and comorbidities for predicting survival.
