Conflict management in intercultural communication: Gaziantep Şahinbey Secondary School example

Changing world system, global events, existence of conflicts between countries and within the country, social media, intercultural communication and interaction, the formation of ıntercultural structures and with the emergence of the concept of Multiculturalism the result of these events cause that different cultures start to live together in different parts of the world, ıntercultural communication applies in multicultıral areas and especially cultural conflicts. To determine the existence and causes of conflicts, which is one of these changes, to demonstrate the situation of migrated people to benefit from educational opportunities at the stage of integration and to be able to understand how the conflicts in multicultural environments are managed by the teachers who have the most responsibility in this process are the problems of this study. The data obtained in the study were collected from the answers given by 15 teachers working in Gaziantep Sahinbey Secondary School. As the result of the study, it was determined that the participants did not know theoretically the ways of conflict management in multicultural environments, and in practice they tried to obtain an adequate solution by acting according to their conscience individually. As a result of the civil war in Syria since 2011, the causes of conflicts during the education process between Turkish and Syrian students in the educational institutions in Gaziantep, which is one of the top 10 provinces with asylum seekers have been reached. Existence, type, level and responses to conflicts were analyzed through the eyes of teachers. As a result, it was concluded that teachers do not have the necessary level of competence in conflict management in intercultural communication, but they also make the necessary efforts in practice.
