Gerund in Kumuk Turkish

A significant portion of Kumuk Turk live in the Republic of Dagestan, with others living in Chechnya, Ossetia, Iran, Turkey and Russia. The earliest mention of the name "Kumuk" is in a Mahmud al-Kashgari's " Divânu Lugâti't-Türk" (Compendium of the Langues of the Turks). Among the Turkish dialects, Kumuk Turkish is classified under Northwest-Kipchak group. The presen study aimed to examine gerunds in Kumuk Turkish in the introduction section, the gerunds in Kumuk Turkish were examined in terms of their suffixes and syntactic and functional properties. The data was compiled from the following works written in Kumuk Turkish: "Amanhor", "Dört Kumuk Masalı Üzerine Gramer İncelemesi (A Grammatical Analysis of Four Kumuk Tales)", "Gül Bağça", "Kumuk Atasözleri ve Deyimleri (Kumuk Proverbs and Idioms)", "Kumuk Halk Anlatmaları (Kumuk Folk Tales)", "Kumuk Türkçesi Deyimleri (Idioms in Kumuk Turkish)", "Kumuk Şairi Şeyit Hanum Alişeva'dan Seçme Şiirler (Selected Poems of Kumuk Poet Şeyit Hanum Alişeva)" and "Kumuk Halk Şairi Yırçı Kazak (the Kumuk Folk Poet Yırçı Kazak)". Each of the selected gerund constructions in Kumuk Turkish was comparatively analysed with its structural and functional counterpart in Modern Turkish. Gerund groups were determined as a result of a detailed scanning of the eight works analysed in the study and presented with their Modern Turkish transliterations.
