A study on the impact of global economic crises on hotel businesses and the strategies implemented in this process: Case of Kuşadasi

2007 the global economic crisis seen the first signs has impacted the financial sector and in the late 2008 has deepened and become a real sector crisis in the world and Turkey. 2008 global economic crisis was not limited only to money and capital markets, has been felt in all sectors. Due to the characteristics of the product they produce and offer in Turkey?s tourism sector hotel businesses which have a structure highly vulnerable to the crisis have been inevitably affected by the global economic crisis.The aim of this study is the determination of the impacts of global economic crisis deepening in 2008 on hotel businesses and the strategies implemented by the managers of hotel businesses before, during and after the crisis. The study has 3 parts. In the first part, definition of crisis, types of crises, factors cause crisis and stages of a crisis have been discussed, the review of literature on crisis management and crisis management process have been evaluated in terms of tourism and especially hotel businesses. In the second part, the concept of economic crisis, the examination of the world?s and Turkey?s economic crises have been discussed and the impacts of 2008 global economic crisis on Turkey and especially on the tourism sector have been evaluated. Also proactive and reactive strategies implemented by the managers of hotel businesses before, during and after the crisis have been explicated. In the last part, the result of the survey that has been applied to the hotel businesses including three, four and five star hotel businesses in Kuşadası for determining the strategies implemented by the managers of the hotel businesses and the impacts of global economic crisis on the relevant hotel businesses and suggestions are given.Key Words: Crisis, Strategy, Hotel Businesses , Economic Crisis
