The impact of globalisation on illegal migration: The case of the city of Adana in Turkey

Globalization has become a widely discussed concept over the past twenty years, both in daily life and in academic circles. This work aims to explore how the concept of migration has changed with globalization, using illegal immigration in Adana, Turkey as a case study. With the advent of globalization, migration has received attention over the last twenty years, and has emerged as an issue of high politics. This work discusses migration, focusing on illegal migration both in theory and in practice. It compares and contrasts academic, political, and bureaucratic perspectives, discussing the challenges of managing migration without taking into consideration the effects of globalization.Turkey?s globalization-era experience with immigration is threefold, serving as a receiving, sending, and transit country. In this respect, the thesis discusses at length the dynamic relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) on questions of immigration. It focuses on the research conducted with illegal immigrants staying at Security Directorate Adana Foreigners Department guest-house, focusing on causes of illegal immigration, immigrant demographics, immigrant family structures, and reasons for choosing their target countries. As a result of this research, I argue that there is an inherent difficulty in determining the reasons for immigration, due in part to the interplay between political and economic conditions in sending countries, which makes immigrant classification extremely challenging.The thesis further argues that due to the financial and human resource burdens immigration places on individual economies, supra-national organizations, rather than individual nation-states, should shoulder the burden of international migration management. This supra-national approach should focus not only on security but also on human rights.
