Effects of globalization on organizational fields: Case from a Turkish cinema field

This study focuses on two problems overlooked by the convergence-divergence debate on institutional change that globalization has made in the organizational field. One of these problems is that while the convergence-divergence debate is often interested in the change that takes place in the `content? of local logic and the organizational form embeded in this logic with the effect of globalization, this debate is generally not interested in the change that occurs in the diffusion and variety of the organizational form. The other problem is that while the debate deals with the change that takes place as a `result? in local logic and organizational form by focusing on mechanism such as `replicating?, `translation? and `bricolage?, it neglects to examine the construction process of this change. Making use of institutional logic approach, this study examines how foreign logic and organizational form that influence local context together with globalization makes a difference in terms of both content and diffusion and variety. By focusing on the institutional change process, the study also examines how `replicating?, `translation? and `bricolage? mechanisms can operate together. The study aims to contribute to the development of a more dynamic approach in the analysis of institutional change by attaining these objectives.This study tries to achieve these objectives by examining institutional change in the field of Turkish Cinema. The production, distribution and exhibition organization of the Turkish Cinema has undergone a transformation by the effects of the America that represents globalization in the cinema sector in the world in 1990?s. The study, firstly examines the construction process and main characteristics of the local logic that dominated the field from 1950s when Turkish Cinema came into existence as a sector until 1990s when global effects began to appear. The study then deals with how the institutional logic dominant in the field in 1990s with the effect of the America has been transferred to the field of the Turkish Cinema and the basic characteristics of such logic in order to compare it with local logic. Making a quantitative examination, the study also explores how the process of transition from local logic to foreign logic has affected the diffusion/variety of organizational forms. It is highlighted that as a result of this examination, the phenomenon of globalization has made a difference in terms of spatial diffusion and variety in the local context and that as a result of this difference, foreign logic has created an 'exclusive' organizational form. The study evaulates this `exclusion? that is created by foreign logic in the local context within framework of debates about the unexpected results of globalization. Finally, taking a qualitative approach, the study examines the process where foreign logic was dominant in the field of Turkish Cinema from 1990?s to 2000?s. The study also examines how local actors perceive and respond to foriegn logic in this process and how they operate the `replicating?, `translation? and `bricolage? mechanisms together in order to survive under the dominance of and to learn this logic.
