Examine the relation between continual anger and depression levels of the kids living with their families and of the ones residing in an orphanage

ABSTRACTThis study, which is carried out to examine the relation between continualanger and depression levels of the kids living with their families and of the onesresiding in an orphanage, includes 170 children, resident of the Malatya SocialServices and Orphanage Institution, who are 13-18 years age range. Thehandicapped children of the institution and the ones not residing there at the timeperiod of the study were not included. 152 children out of 170 orphanageresidents and 148 children out of 160 high school students who were selected assample from the Sümer Lisesi (High School) were contacted. Unanswered onesare the persons who have not completed the questionnaires.Persons included inthis study were enforced to complete a questionnaire containing demographicattributes, visitors of the orphanage besides a depression scale, scales of thecontinual anger and mode of anger for the children.50.7 girl and 49.3 boy are studied. The average age of those who live withtheir families are 15.95+0.89 and the ones reside in the orphanage are 15.85+1.55.Parents of 88.7% of the orphanage residents are separated. Depression symptomswere found in 16.9% of the persons who are living with their parents and 25% ofones who are orphanage residents. Continual anger scale score for the ones havingno depression symptoms in the persons of this study has been found as23.77+6.29, and the same score for the ones having depression symptoms amongthem is 26.95+6.44. It has also been found that the anger-in scale score for theones having no depression symptoms is 16.87+4.65, and the same score for theones having depression symptoms is 18.79+4.90, anger-out scale score for theones having no depression symptoms is 17.64+5.29, and anger-out scale score forthe ones having depression symptoms is 19.60+5.51.Consequently, this study indicates that the family structure of the childrenunder the care of the institution is disintegrated and education levels of thefamilies are low. Their depression symptoms, the scores of continual anger andanger mode have been found higher than those of the kids living at home.Key words: Orphanage, family, depression, anger.
