IV ABSTRACT Decoration begins with the history of man.lt is the desire of humanbeing to decorate himself, the enviorranent where he lives and the furniture thet he uses. One of the variations of our national which transfers mine art to decoration throughout the years is niello style. Niello whic comes with Turks living in the region of Hazar is performed in most of our cities,but firstly in Van.Today some studies about this art are achieved in Van, Erzurum, Trabzon, Eskişehir. On a research it has not been seen studies about niello with wide scope.with the result of literature scanning on niello style applied to silver in Kutahya.it has not met any research about research's subject with a scientefic feature.In the education point of research of Subject in Gazi Universty Beypazarı instution of higher education applied ornament technology programme and Mersin Universty instution of higher education applied ornament technology programme that niello style is processed teorithically and it is not given enough time to it,is seen. With a starting point of thougt that is expressed in this planned and processed research; it is provided with documenting by researching the niello style applied to silver ornament in Kütahya and its usage fields and technique feature and it is understood that it is.İmportant to be saved and survived. The niello which is one of the decoration styles of the traditional silver jewellery;the mixture of niello prepared in a plate is put into the channels which are opened on work with steel pencil by dropping or spreading, when the niello which has been melted by keeping it towards stove fire fills gaps will be left to be cooled. After cooled niello is passed from a few smoothing phase, the silver will be polished and the work becomes completed. The research is limited with Kütahya's central county. Seven pieces in Kütahya Etnografya Museum,in Kütahya in private collections 22 pieces silver jewellery samples which were made by niello style and in Kütahya's central county 6 public art works were found which used the niello style in silver jewellery. The main requisites which are used at niello samples are samples silver, lead, copper and sulfur. Producdion techniques are tatoo, using wire, piercing and polishing. Putting together techniques are welding, riverting and ring. Ringswere seldomly used. While choosing the putting together techniqes which are a must bcause of decorating techniqueand shape of the production are used. Decorating techniques are the pen work "güherse" and relief. All the silver ornement samples with niello are decorated with botanic and geometric items. Written, architecural and decoration which is affected from human anatomy were seldomly used. Sitilised from the nature of animal; "barok", "ampir" ve rococo techniques are not found. In searching process, the one whom interviewed as master don't deal with anything except their work. Their ages varies between 48 and 68. thety started to work on the field in the primary school time. While applying the niello technique to the silver they use 800-900 karat and above silver. The items that they use in niello tecnique, differing from the other techniques are mortar and niello cover and varying according to chosen method; relrefing cylinder in machine and "mandate horn". The ornements to which tehey applied the technique are keepsake braclet, ring, amulet,wrist ornement and bit. Rings are amulet couldn't be found through the research. The motifs that they apply the niello technique, traditional and written motifs, the people's qwn techniques, the botanic techniques are tulip, rose etc... motifs.Preparing niello mud takes 1 or 1,5 hour. The fact that the learning the niello technique takes too long time and as a rsult of decreasing interest in niello the decreasing of incomes from it are the handicaps for new generation to learn niello technique. As a result of loosing it's importance the ornement with niello is produced today. The ornements with niello which are produced in past years are bougt and sold today and if not they are melted and used to produce silver. The increasing interest in golden ornament with the increase in financial power has nearly stopped this tradition. To consider the niello one of our precious decoration styles, today teaching of the niello master's knowledge to new generations,more researcher's turning towards this subject and education institution's taking this style into their programme will transfer this art to new generations before it becomes extinct. Time and opportunity must be provided to educators and to researchers and supported projects must be given. To make the niello style continuous will be possible with the researcher's study and it will form a source to future generations.
