SUMMARY Master Thesis DETERMİNATİON OF THE SİDE WEİR DİSCHARGE CAPACİTY BY THE DOMÍNGUEZ APPROACH İN CURVED CHANNELS Esra ULUCAN Firat University Institute of Science and Technology Department of Civil Engineering 2017,56 The lateral weirs, or side weirs, are commonly used in civil and environmental engineering project (e.g., flood channels systems, irrigation systems, combine sewerage systems, dam reservoirs and intake structures. Side weirs mostly convey excess flows into a collection channel or to divert a certain water into a diversion open channel. Side weirs are commonly rectangular in shape. Moreover, there are a lot of side weir shapes (e.g., triangular side weir, oblique side weir, labyrinth side weir). Labyrinth side weirs are a new weir type and it is quite popular in recent years. In the current study, the triangular labyrinth side weirs have used instead of conventional side weirs. Discharge coefficient of the triangular labyrinth side weir has been determined using Domínguez approach. The scope of discharge capacity of the labyrinth side weirs using Domínguez approach is not available, within our knowledge, in the literature. Therefore, this issue is original. In the study, laboratory experiment data from TÜBİTAK project (104M394) were used in order to determine by using Domínguez approach the discharge coefficient of the triangular labyrinth side weirs. The experimental data belong to a curved channel for different labyrinth side weir apex angle, opening length of weir, height of the crest. At the experiments, the weir opening lengths (L) were taken as 25, 50 and 75 cm. The weir crest heights (p) were 12, 16 and 20 cm. The labyrinth side weir apex angles (θ) were 45°, 60°, 90°, 120°, and 150°. Moreover, the angle of bend center (𝑎) were 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 150°. VII In this study, the variation of the discharge coefficient values according to Froude number was studied in detail. Moreover, the variation of the discharge coefficient values in accordance with the values of dimensionless nappe load [(𝑦1−𝑝)/𝑝] was evaluated. As a conclusion, Domínguez method was compared with Schmidt and De Marchi approaches. It can be seen that the values at Domínguez method are scattered very less than the other approaches. Thus, Domínguez method can be used safely for determining of the discharge coefficient of the labyrinth side weirs. Key words: Side weir, triangular labyrinth side weir, Domínguez approach
