Abstract (EN)

8. ABSTRACT EVALUATION OF THE PRESENCE OF ESTROGEN (E), PROGESTERONE (P) AND ANDROGEN (A) RECEPTORS IN LARYNX SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMAS Laryngeal carcinoma is the 2nd most common malignancy of the respiratory system after bronchogenic carcinoma. The fact that the larynx is a secondary sex organ that shows physiological changes in puberty has brought to the agenda the issue of whether there is a relationship between sex hormone receptors such as estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), androgen receptors (AR) and the development of laryngeal carcinoma. The finding of prognostically significant results between ER, PR and AR expression and laryngeal SCC in a limited number of studies has initiated a debate on whether hormone receptors may play an important role in the prognosis and treatment of laryngeal SCC. Our aim in this study is to evaluate whether there are differences in terms of the presence of ER, PR and AR expression, prediction of progression and recurrence, and the treatment modalities to be chosen in laryngeal SCC patients diagnosed at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Pathology. There are a limited number of studies on this subject in the literature, and this study aims to contribute to the literature. In our study, 103 laryngeal SCC cases were re-evaluated demographically, clinically and histopathologically. In addition, ER, PR and AR were applied immunohistochemically to two paraffin blocks selected from each case. Tumor size, stage at diagnosis, tumor localization, LV invasion, PN invasion, laryngectomy procedure and immunohistochemical ER, PR and AR were our main variables and the relationships between them were evaluated. In our study, no significant relationship was observed between ER, PR and AR expression and histopathological, clinical and survival parameters in laryngeal squamous carcinoma patients. The results of our study do not support the necessity of antihormonal treatment in laryngeal squamous carcinoma. Our results obtained to show the relationship of ER, PR and AR receptor expression with prognosis and carcinogenesis in laryngeal squamous carcinoma indicate that other theories should be considered on this subject. We believe that more comprehensive studies are needed for this purpose.
