Özet (EN)

By being constructed in the safe water areas, the ports have been the trade and the economy centres of the cities since the ancient times. By the help of the developments in the sea technology, the hinterlands of the ports have become larger and also the commercial activities have increased. Since the 20th century some port regions have become inadequate and they have lost some of their functions because of technological, geographical and socio-economical reasons. The functions of the ports have been removed to the recently constructed ports outside the cities and the old ports. In this thesis the transformation process in the port regions have been analyzed in the urban scale and in the building scale. First of all the purpose and the techniques of the work have been explained. After representing the basic information about the ports and the kinds of ports, the historical process since the ports first emerged until the transformation has been represented. After making the decision of transformation by adaptive re-using the port regions and the buildings within the ports, the issues of how to follow the transformation process, the method of selecting the new function and the interventions during the transformations have been dealt with. Three port buildings have been selected as the examples of adaptive re-used buildings and they have been observed in a detailed way. Two of them are The Number Four Transit Store building in the Salıpazarı port region which has been transformed into İstanbul Modern Art Museum and the Number Five Warehouse building which is still being transformed into Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Fine Arts and Sculpture Museum. The third example is the Almacenes Generales de Comercio warehouse building which has been transformed into Museu d'història de Catalunya (Catalunya History Museum) in Barselona Port Vell region. Primarily the historical development and the transformation process of the selected port regions have been represented. All of the changes have been divided into two headlines and they have been analyzed in an urban and a building scale. In the urban scale, the changement of the place throughout the history has been represented by the help of the maps of the region. The open air arrangements and the entrance to the region have been reported as a result of the observations in the previously mentioned places in question. The physical and the spatial transformation have been analyzed under the fifteen headlines of additions, structure, facade, entrance, exhibition area, cafe/restaurant, museum store, library, administration units, wet areas , technical units, storage/archives. Finally, the evaluations about the transformation of the analyzed examples have been compared by means of fifteen charts. By the help these comparisons, it has been intended to make the applied methods an adaptive re-used model for the new port regions.
