A proposal method to determine the hinterland of prots (Izmir Alsancak Port)

Maritime transportation?s becoming unrivalled among the other transportation possibilities in mass freight shipment raised the importance of the ports in foreign trade to the highest level. As a result of globalization most of the limits have been demolished and this led to an increase in the movement of goods, services and investments around the world. Importance of maritime transportation will continue to increase today and in the future. Thus, the role of the ports all around the world will increase too.Realization of a port investment, which is one of the main infrastructure investments of economic activities, depends on the rate of transformation of the savings in the area of investment and its circle into commercial, value added products or industrial potential. Existence of this potential provides the construction of a port in that area and this construction brings dynamism to its economy. Efficiency of the ports and the size of the economic dynamism change according to the characteristics of the ports? hinterland. Although there are studies and models analyzing the economic impacts of the ports, in this study a unique methodology proposal has been developed to determine the hinterland of the ports. This newly developed methodology has been tested during the determination of the Izmir Alsancak Port?s hinterland.In this context, determination of Izmir Alsancak Port?s hinterland was tried to be determined; the link of the port to Izmir?s economy was searched by analyzing the users of Izmir Alsancak Port with this unique model.
