The relationhip between the level of aggression and family functions of high school first grade students

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the levels of aggression and family functions of high school first grade students. In relation with some socio-demographic variables, the levels of aggression and family functions of the students were also studied whether they significantly differentiate or not.The sample of the study, which was proportionally sampled according to the school type, consisted of a total of 340 high school first grade students. The sample was composed of four different high schools in İzmir, Bayraklı.The data was collected through the use of three measurements. Aggression Scale was used to measure the aggression level; Family Assessment Device was used to measure the family functions and Personal Information Sheet was used to obtain socio-demographic data regarding the students. The data was analyzed by the use of SPSS 15.0 program. To analyze the data; t-tests, One-Way Anova, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U and Pearson Product Moments Correlation were used.Results of the study showed that the levels of aggression and the family functions of the students were correlated significantly at low to medium levels.Significant differences were found in high school first grade students? aggression levels according to gender and their mothers? education level. On the other hand; no significant differences were found according to their fathers? education level, their parents? marital status, work position and their relationships, number of siblings in the family, perceived socio-economic level and school type.Significant differences were found in high school first grade students? family functions regarding gender in the function of affective responsiveness; their mothers? education level in the function of roles; their fathers? working condition in the function of problem solving; number of siblings in the functions of affective responsiveness and general functions; their parents? level of ?getting along well? ; in the functions of problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness,affective involvement, general functions; perceived socio-economic level in the functions of communication and affective responsiveness. On the other hand; there weren?t any significant differences found in high school first grade students? family functions regarding their fathers? education level, their mothers? working condition and the type of school they attended.Key Words: High school first grade students, adolescence, aggression, family functions.
