Relationships between academic procrastination andsmartphone addiction and parental attitudes in high school students

This study aimed to examine the relationship between academic procrastination, smartphone addiction and parental attitudes in high school students, and to determine the predictive power of smartphone addiction and parental attitudes on academic procrastination. The study also examined whether academic procrastination differs according to gender and grade level. The research was conducted with the relational scanning method. Data were collected by convenient sampling method. The sample of the research consists of 387 female and 235 male high school students. Personal information form containing sociodemographic data in order to collect research data; "Academic Procrastination Scale" (Çakıcı, 2003) was developed by Kwon et al., (2013) and its Turkish adaptation was published by Demirci et al. "Smartphone Addiction Scale" by Arrindell et al. (2014). (1999) developed by Dirik et al. "Abbreviated Perceived Parental Attitudes" adapted to Turkish by (2004) was used. SPSS 27.0 program was used to analyze the data obtained in the research. Correlation analysis was applied to examine whether there is a significant relationship between academic procrastination, smartphone addiction and parental attitudes. The predictive power of smartphone addiction and parental attitudes on academic procrastination was also examined by hierarchical regression analysis. In addition, it was determined by t-test and one-way analysis of variance whether academic procrastination differed significantly according to gender and grade level. According to correlation analysis; a moderate positive relationship was found between academic procrastination and smartphone addiction, and a low level positive relationship was found between parental overprotective attitude and parental rejecting attitude and academic procrastination. A low-level positive relationship was found between smartphone addiction and parental overprotective and parental rejecting attitudes. As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that smartphone addiction and father's rejecting attitude predicted academic procrastination in high school students. However, it was found that academic procrastination did not differ significantly according to gender and grade level. In other words, it has been concluded that high school students with high smartphone addiction and rejecting father attitudes have more academic procrastination behavior. There was no significant difference in academic procrastination behavior of high school students according to gender and grade level.
