Investigation of the physical activity and obesity levels of high school students (Malatya provincial example)

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the physical activity and obesity levels of high school students in Malatya. Materials and Methods: This research is a descriptive study in the survey model. The sample of the study consisted of 251 students from 9-10-11 and 12 grades in the high schools of Malatya. In the study, V International Physical Activity Questionnaire "was used as data collection tools and height and weight were measured for BMI values. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test and ANOVA test were used for statistical methods. The level of significance was adopted as α=0.05. Results: In the study, mean scores of the mean MET level (x=1486,24), mean MET level mean scores (x=1027,52), high MET level mean scores (x=2016,09) and total MET level mean scores of the students (x=4529,86). Physical activity scale of students according to theirgender, class, age, BMI, schools, maternal professions, parents 'education, families' income, computer use, dinner-eating status, canteen eating status, family being obese person and service usage status A significant difference (p<0.05) was found between the scores. However, there was no significant difference (p>0,05) between the physical activity scale scores of the students according to their father's occupations, watching TV, using mobile phones, using tablet and eating lunch. Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the physical activity of the students was above the medium level. In addition, it was concluded that there is a relationship between obesity and physical activity. Keywords: Obesity, Physical Activity, MET, High School Students
