The relationship between the levels of forgiveness and self-confidence of 12th grade students

This research study is done in order to determine the relationship between the levels of forgiveness and self-confidence of 12th grade students. The research also embraces the gender, perceived parental attitudes and economic level aspects. The data reached from the research is analyzed through 22.00 SPSS. The research study is done with 302 participants who are 12th grade students at different schools during 2015-2016 School Year. The data of the research is acquired through Personal Information Form and with the methods of Heartland Forgiveness Scale that includes 18 entries, developed by Thompson et. al (2005), adapted by Bugay & Demir (2010) and with Self-Confidence Scale that includes 33 entries developed by Akın (2007). The research is comprised of 115 male (%51,3) and 147 female (%48,7) participants. T Test analysis is carried out in order to examine the forgiveness effect and self-confidence levels of the participants. ANOVA is applied in order to identify the effect of economic level on the levels of forgiveness and self-confidence. ANOVA is applied also to examine the relationship between the levels of forgiveness and self-confidence with the parental attitudes that are reported by the participants. Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient analysis is used to determine the relationship between the levels of forgiveness and self-confidence. Heartland Forgiveness Scale that is used as a tool at the research is evaluated with Forgiving the Self/Others/The Situation subtests and Self-Confidence Scale is evaluated with Inner Confidence and External Confidence subtests. The evaluation of the research data analysis has shown that gender differences have no significant effect on forgiveness, self-confidence and sub-dimensions' levels. It is also determined from the research analysis that while the parental attitudes that are reported by the participants have no significant effect on the levels of forgiving the others and the situations, it has significant effects on forgiving him/herself. As a result of Tukey Test; it is confirmed that students whose parents have democratic and protective attitudes, have a higher level of self-forgiveness. Besides, the parental attitudes that are reported have no significant effect on self-confidence. According to the research results; the levels of self-confidence and the total self-confidence with its inner and external aspects increase when the levels of forgiveness, forgiving him/herself and forgiving the situation levels increase. Additionally; no significant relationship found between the level of forgiving the others and the total self-confidence (including inner and external forgiveness aspects). In the paper; the data acquired from the research is discussed and suggestions related to applied fields are developed.
