Liturgical metalworks belong to Byzantine period in the archaeology museum of Istanbul

In this study, the liturgical metalworks belong to the Byzantine period in Istanbul Archaeological Museums have been the subject. Eucharist, which is the basic liturgy of Christianity is seen as a distinctive movement of his worship. This movement belongs to Jesus and those who believe in him. During the eucharist liturgy, above the altar symbolizing the Tomb of Jesus, various liturgical items have been used to aid for its realization. Paten and Chalice, two of the main elements of the eucharist among these items which also have symbolic meanings as well as them specific functions. Others are being considered as objects that help perform the ritual. These Works, have importance in terms of showing the given importance to items being used in the churches during liturgy and/or other times, in Byzantine empire in which art production mostly based on religion. In this study, 63 metal liturgical works in Istanbul Archaeological Museums which gathered by confiscation or purchase from individuals and dated to the Byzantine period, the majority of which are unpublished have been introduced. The differences of the innovations brought by these works has been determined by considering the known examples and the characteristics of the period in which they gained density. Also, to the extent permitted by archaeological data, possible forms of distribution of artifacts and them routes presented as a proposal, religion over works-along with the phenomenon of art, the connection of religion-function-depiction is established, resulting in a whole by handling the liturgy of the period.
