What hospitals that perform lumbar disk hernia surgery need to learn

The purpose of this study conducted at the brain surgery department of Şehit Kamil State Hospital, is to discover what hospitals that perform lumbar disk hernia surgery need to learn. Patients who undergo lumbar disk hernia surgery, experience a s erious loss of work power and decrease in quality of life post- surgery. Because of this it is necessary for the patient to maintain a balance between the new way of life after the surgery and the changes in life activities after the procedure. This can only be ensured by good counseling and training that will be given before the patients return to their normal lives. The participants in this study had all undergone lumbar disk hernia surgery. The average age of the participants was 48.6±12. In terms of gender, the Patient Learning Needs Scale shows that male patients require more knowledge than female patients. In the subscale of quality of life (p˂0.005) and skin care (p˂0.001), it was determined that the information needs of unmarried participants were higher those of married participants and the difference between the groups was statistically significant. In the subscales of treatment and complications (p˂0.027) and community and follow-up (p˂0.030), it was found that the education needs of the patient group who were educated by doctors were high and the difference between the groups was significant. In the subscale of quality of life (p˂0.039), the training needs of the group of nurses were high and the difference between the groups was significant.It is recommended that the patient's learning needs be identified before illness education is given, and that the education should be arranged according to the determined learning needs.
