The effect of simulated clinical immersion videos assisted mobilization protocol on postoperative pain, fear of movement, movement level, and satisfaction in lumbar spinal surgery patients

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effect of Simulated Clinical Immersion Videos-Assisted Mobilization (SimCIVAM) Protocol on postoperative pain, fear of movement, movement level, and satisfaction in lumbar spinal surgery patients. Method: This is a single-center, pretest-posttest, and single-blind randomized controlled study. After the ethics committee approval was obtained, the study was conducted with patients who underwent lumbar spinal surgery (microdiscectomy) at Akdeniz University Hospital between January 2022 and May 2023. Patients who were applied the SimCIVAM protocol were included in the intervention group (n = 45), and those who received the routine application (n = 45) were included in the control group. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, a Mobilization Monitoring Form, the Visual Analogue Scale for pain, satisfaction, and movement desire, the Patient Mobility and Observer Mobility Scale, and the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale. The data were analyzed on the IBM SPSS 23.0 software package and compared within the scope of per-protocol and intention-to-treat analyses by using parametric and nonparametric tests and doing normality tests. Results: It was found that the intervention group, who were mobilized within the scope of the SimCIVAM protocol, experienced less waist (p<0.001) and leg (p<0.05) pain following lumbar spinal surgery (microdiscectomy) and that the protocol had positive effects on fear of movement (p<0.001), movement level (p<0.001) and satisfaction (p<0.001). Conclusion: It was determined that lumbar spinal surgery (microdiscectomy) patients who were applied the SimCIVAM protocol experienced less pain and fear and that their mobility and satisfaction levels were higher.
