Metaphors and realia commonly used in literary works pose significant problems in the translation process. This research focuses on solution strategies for the translation of these items based on the Turkish versions of the novel Beneath the Wheel (Orig. Unterm Rad) by H. Hesse. General information on the theories is provided at the beginning of the research. Afterwards, the examples selected from the novel are analysed. The analysis is in general based on Christiane Nord's "Text Analysis in Translation". The translation solutions offered by the translators are assessed according to Nord's criterion "functionality plus loyalty". Three different translations of the novel are examined: Çarklar Arasında by K. Şipal (Afa publishing, 1990; Can publishing, 2002) and Harika Çocuk by G. İçöz (Can publishing, 1991). The analysis results suggest that the translators had recourse to different strategies to translate the metaphors and realia in the novel. The analysis further shows that, in İçöz's translation, the translations of the wheel metaphor and of a few realia are inadequate. Nevertheless, when the text is considered as a whole, all translations fulfill substantially Nord's "functionality plus loyalty" requirement, Şipal's translation being slightly more functional and loyal.
