Turkish surnames in Lebanon

In this research, the surnames which are used in Lebanon with certain limitations and which are completely or partially Turkish, are examined. According to offical records, there are thirty-one different religious identities in Lebanon. In addition to these religious identities such as; Druze, Assyrians, Armenians and Sunnites , three subgroups in Sunnite belief , Crete emigrants, Turkmens, citizens of the Republic of Turkey who have dual citizenship, are categorised as separate groups in the research since they have unique features. Thus, seven different groups have been formed. The surnames of 283.000 people in these groups have been examined. Among the surnames that have been analyzed, 1.428 surnames that are wholly or partially Turkish , have been examined in terms of meaning, origin and structure. In the first chapter of this eleven-chapter study, the aim, scope, method and literature of the thesis are discussed. In the second chapter, classifications in the field of onomatology are included and a categorisation study has been made about the names of individuals.In the third chapter, Lebanon , the study area, is introduced generally. Between chapters 4 to 10, the Turkish / mixed surnames of the groups mentioned above are examined. In these chapters, first of all, the group discussed is introduced and then the surnames of these groups are discussed in terms of meaning, origin and structure and finally, the surnames used by these groups are evaluated. In this research,in which the general appearance of the surnames bearing Turkish or a Turkish element is tried to be revealed, mostly used suffixes and words are also determined. In the eleventh chapter where there are conclusions and submissions, some inferences and suggestions based on the data obtained have been made. With the determination of Turkish surnames or surnames with Turkish elements in Lebanon , both widespread usage of Turkish surnames and at the same time ,attention to a common element between the two countries have been drawn.
