Abstract (EN)

Youth is a social category that is often treated as a biological phenomenon. Youth is constituted by the totality of interventions from above and below, linked on the one hand to the state's need to create citizens and on the other to the socialization of peers coming together at school and in urban spaces, and continues to take on new forms in the same dialectic. Today, however, many misleading social meanings, good and bad, are attributed to youth by thinking of it as a biological category. Against this approach that we encounter in the fields of media and politics, there is another misleading view that reduces youth to a category shaped by the state. This study addresses the production of youth against these perspectives and evaluates youth as a product of the classification struggles of different social forces. In this sense, it follows Pierre Bourdieu's principle of de-naturalization against the naturalization of social phenomena and refers to Bourdieu's concepts. In line with this conceptual framework, it suggests thinking about the way young people participate in the classification struggles of the youth through Asef Bayat's concept of reclaiming youth. The space of studenthood is also produced through struggles similar to those that apply to youth. It is thought that the state is the absolute determinant of place as it is of youth, whereas place, more precisely space, as we learn from Henri Lefebvre, is produced in a triple dialectic with its designed, perceived and experienced dimensions. By adapting Lefebvre's approach to the student space, this study analyzes the contradictions between the student life designed by state policies- programs of capital, the symbolic student life that comes to mind when one thinks of being a student, and the everyday student life in its real rhythm. It examines student movements with the concept of field within this spatiality. It follows the literature that brings Bourdieu's tools to the field of social movements and presents an up-to-date view of the field of student movements in Turkey. It centers on the example of the Barınamıyoruz Movement, which proves the conceptual discussion of the study in the practice. Barınamıyoruz Movement, which started in September 2021 with an action of about twenty young people sleeping in a park to draw attention to the housing problem, triggered similar actions in many cities in a few days, gained visibility in the media, became a network of thousands of young x people, and made the housing problem of students a political agenda at all levels from local governments to national elections, shows that youth organizations can classify the youth as "barınamayanlar" [those who can't shelter] by forming a movement with a successful initiative, turn the housing problem into a public debate and intervene in the formulation of youth policies. The aim of this thesis was to explain the political processes through which the youth politics practice of the Barınamıyoruz Movement was shaped, the sources from which it was fed, how it was organized, and the structural conditions that served as the basis for it. In this context, in-depth interviews were conducted with young people engaged in the movement. In the literature section of the research, the fields of youth sociology, social movement research and urban studies were consulted. This resulted in a work consisting of two main chapters, one providing a spatial framework for a multidimensional analysis of student life, and the other explaining the example of youth politics put forward by Barınamıyoruz, with particular reference to the concept set of the resource mobilization ecole. The first chapter presents the tools needed to understand student space and proposes a synthesis to look at student movements. In this context, the chapter consists of three sub- parts: 1) dealing with the formation of youth in terms of classification struggles, 2) evaluating student life with a dialectical perspective that tries to understand spatiality, and 3) reading the current situation of student life and student movements in Turkey around the concepts of space and field instead of a ruptureist perspective with the concept of generation. In the second part, the political practice produced by the Barınamıyoruz Movement is analyzed together with these contexts and tools. This chapter includes three sub- parts: 1) an accounting of the political process that shaped the movement, 2) an evaluation of the interpretative framework that transforms the demand for the right to housing into a form of reclaiming the youth, together with the identity of the movement it reveals, and 3) a discussion of the political practice of the movement. In conclusion, by examining the case of Barınamıyoruz, the study reveals that in a context where cities and universities have been shaped by neoliberal policies for many years, students can be involved in the production of space with their demands for the xi right to housing. The framing of the movement that combines the right to housing with the tendency of reclaiming youth and the identity of the movement that emerges as a result is analyzed. Finally, the political practice of Barınamıyoruz is considered together with its repertoire of actions and tactical decisions and explained with the strategy called sincere apoliticism in the literature. Key words: youth, student space, youth movements, right to housing, Barınamıyoruz Movement.
