The relationship between spiritual well-being situations and hopelessness levels in substance abuse

Abstract (EN)
Substance abuse; has become an important public healt problem in Turkey as well as in the world. Individuals tend to use substance for many reasons such as avoiding difficulties, loneliness, ignorance and having fun. After starting to use drugs, they cannot cope with the problems caused by drug addiction and start to seek treatment methods. Individuals whose treatments fail, after a while, isolate themselves from society and their values and get lonely and despair. Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the relation of the spiritual well-being of the individuals diagnosed with substance abuse on the level of hopelessness. Method: The sample of research, between September 1, 2018 - February 1, 2019, 246 patients who were hospitalized in AMATEM Hospital of Elazığ Mental Hospital, the sample of the study, recurrent hospitalizations and patients who did not agree to participate in the study were included in the remaining 201 patients. Sociodemographic Information Form, Spiritual Well-being Scale and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used for data collection. In the evaluation of the data; percentages, mean, standard deviation, Pearson Correlation Analysis. Findings: The mean age of the participants was 28.59 ± 8.54 and all participants were male. The total score of the participants from the Spiritual Well-being Scale was 109.89 ± 15.88, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale score was 7.33 ± 5.30. In this study, a negative correlation was found between Spiritual well-being and Hopelessness levels of the patients (p <0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between the total scores of the patients with the Spiritual Well-being Scale and the number of applications to the inpatient treatment center (p <0.01). There was a positive correlation between total scores of Beck Hopelessness Scale and number of applications to inpatient treatment center (p <0.05). There was a poor negative correlation between the total scores of the Beck Hopelessness Scale and the age of the patients (p <0.05). Result: According to the patients' spiritüel well-being and hopelessness levels were above the average. As the levels of spiritual well-being increased, hopelessness levels decreased. It is advisable to provide counseling and care services to increase the patient's spiritüel well-being
