The comparison of resilience and family functions of substance user and non-user adolescents

The aim of this study is to make comparisons about Resilience and Family Functions among the adolescents who use substance and don?t use substance.A total of 6322 9th grade students from 25 high schools in İzmir Bornova were proportionally sampled according to school type. 750 adolescents in 7 high schools in Bornova are in the sample. In 750 adolescents, 63% of participants are girls (473 girls) and 36% of participants are boys (277 boys). The age average of participants is 15,22.The aim of this study is to make comparisons about Resilience and Family Functions among the adolescents who use substance and don?t use substance.A total of 6322 9th grade students from 25 high schools in İzmir Bornova were proportionally sampled according to school type. 750 adolescents in 7 high schools in Bornova are in the sample. The age average of participants is 15,22.?Family Assesment Device?, ?Resilience and Youth Development Module? and ?Demographic Data Form? were used as research instruments in this study.To analyze the data, SPSS 15,0 program was used. T-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation were used to analyze the relationship between levels of resilience, family functions and the other variables (sex, substance use, school type, substance use in family, level of income).Findings: The prevelance of lifetime one or more substance using is 45% among the adolescents in sampling. Prevalence of substances use was estimated as follows: alcohol drinking 40.1% (one or more in one month 35.5%), tobacco smoking 21.6%, illicit drug use 2.2%. Prevalence of illicit drug use was estimated as follows: hashish 1.2%, volatile substances 1.2%, pills (like ecstasy) .7%, cocain .5% and heroin .5%.For substance use variable, ?school caring relationships and high expectations?, ?goals?, ?home caring relationships?, ?peer high expectations?, ?home high expectations?, ?empathy?, ?communication and cooperation?, ?self awareness?, ?educational aspirations? of adolescents who don?t use substance were found higher than the adolescents who use substances.For substance use variable, ?problem solving?, ?affective responsiveness?, of adolescents who don?t use substance were found higher than the adolescents who use substances. ?Communication?, ?roles?, ?affective involvement? ?behavioral control?, ?general family functioning? of adolescents who use substance were found higher than the adolescents who don?t use substances.According to the results, it has been found out that there is a meaningful relationship between the levels of family functioning and Resilience and Youth Development Module?s sub scales (except educational aspirations). As there is a drift in family functions towards an healthy level, the scores of Resilience and Youth Development Module?s sub scales increase.
