The effects of childhood traumas, spiritual orientations and psychological flexibility of patients diagnosed with substance use disorder on treatment motivation and self-efficacy

This study aims to determine the effects of childhood traumas, spiritual orientations and psychological flexibility of patients diagnosed with substance disorders on treatment motivation and self-efficacy. It was conducted on 113 patients between the ages of 18 and 65, who received inpatient and outpatient treatment in the Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment and Training Centre (AMATEM) Clinic in ŞANLIURFA MEHMET AKIF INAN TRAINING AND RESEARCH HOSPITAL between the 13th of March and 13th of November 2023. While collecting the data, Personal Information Form, Addiction Profile Index (API) Scale, Childhood Trauma Scale (CTS), Spiritual Orientation Scale (SOS), Psychological Flexibility Scale (PFS), Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) were used. Collected data were analysed via IBM SPSS 25.0 Package Software using the Kruskal-Wallis H Test, Anova T-test, Mann-Whitney U Test and Spearman's Rank Correlation test. The Total Scale Scores of the patients diagnosed with substance use disorder were as follows: API 14.34±2.83, CTS 52.27±16.27, SOS 89.29±18.53, PFS 128.01±25.98, TMQ 83.17±11.19 and GSES 63.57±11.96. There is a negative, moderate and statistically significant relationship between the Mean Total Score of the CTS and the Mean Total Score of the GSES (p<0.05). There is a positive, moderate and statistically significant relationship between the Mean Total Score of the SOS and the Mean Total Score of the GSES (p<0.05). There is a positive, moderate and statistically significant relationship between the Mean Total Score of the PFS and the Mean Total Score of the GSES (p<0.05). It is found that childhood traumas, spiritual orientations and psychological flexibility predicted general self-efficacy levels by 48.7%, but did not predict treatment motivation levels. It is recommended that the individual's childhood traumas should be reviewed, interventions to improve spiritual orientation, psychological flexibility and general self-efficacy levels should be planned and the individual should be redirected to psycho-education programmes.
