Validity and reliability of the smoking behavior of mine workers and health belief model scale in smoking cessation

Aim of this study was determine sociodemographic characteristics of the smoker miners, smoke characteristics and to develop a scale about smoking cessation Health Belief Model behavior in Zonguldak Karadon Establishment. This research consists of 2 stages. The first phase was the methodological type for improving the scale on university students and the second stage is the descriptive type in which the developed scale (HBM-SCS) was applied on mine workers. The mean how long has been smoking of 473 workers who participated in the study was 11.4 ± 5.85 years, only 11.2% of the workers tried to quit smoking at least once and 83% of them did not attempt to quit smoking. Of those who attempted to quit, only 7 workers (1%) were found to have not smoked for less than six months. The mean of cigarette smoking is 16.7 ± 33.82 days. On average, the average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 14.3 ± 7.18. It was seen that the workers who work on the ground were significantly higher than the workers working under the ground, and the workers who worked during the day had significantly higher HBM-SCS scores. In this study, the mean scores of sensitiveness and severity perception scores of workers who have been smoking or not thinking about smoking for a period of one month or 6 months, or who have been smoking cigarettes for at least six months, were found to be significantly higher than the other workers.
