Abstract (EN)

Retrospective Analysis of Clinical and Laboratory Findings of Children with Gastroenteritis in Malatya Province between 2015 and 2020 Objective: Rotaviruses are the most important cause of acute gastroenteritis, which is among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among children throughout the world and in our country. In this study, our aim was to examine in detail the cases with rotavirus gastroenteritis, which is an important public health problem. Material and Method: Cases with acute gastroenteritis who were aged 0-18, who referred to Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Centre between January 2015 and January 2020 and who were tested for rotavirus antigen in stool were included in the study. The cases who were grouped in two as "rotavirus positive and rotavirus negative gastroenteritis" were examined retrospectively in detail in terms of being followed and treated in outpatient, inpatient and intensive care units. Results: A total of 2690 children as 1340 rotavirus positive and 1350 rotavirus negative control group were included in the study. Rotavirus positive gastroenteritis was mostly (27.2%) seen in Winter. 53.9% of the rotavirus positive gastroenteritis cases were followed and treated as inpatients. It was found that rotavirus positive case rates were the highest in 7-12 month-old (%19.8), 13-24 month-old (%23.9) and 25-60 month-old (%24.1) age groups. pH, HCO3-, CRP, WBC, lymphocyte, Na+ and K+ values of rotavirus positive gastroenteritis group were found to be significantly lower than those of the rotavirus negative gastroenteritis group (p<0.001). On the other hand, BUN, Cr, uric acid, AST, ALT (p<0.001) and Hb values (p=0.006) of the rotavirus positive gastroenteritis group were found to be significantly higher than those of the rotavirus negative gastroenteritis group. Conclusion: Our study consists of a large number of cases with a wide range of referral. A large number of laboratory parameter changes were found in rotavirus positive gastroenteritis cases. We believe that our results will contribute to studies conducted on rotavirus positive gastroenteritis. Key Words: Child, gastroenteritis, laboratory, Malatya, rotavirus
