Abstract (EN)

The present study was designed to investigate the structural characteristics of small ruminant and cattle farming in Malatya province by employing a quantitative research approach, specifically the survey model. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 120 livestock producers engaged in both small ruminant and cattle husbandry. The responses were subsequently analyzed using statistical software. The results demonstrated that the average age of the participants was 44.88 years, with a mean farming experience of 12.83 years. A majority of the enterprises owned their land, combined crop and livestock production, and pursued animal husbandry for both meat and milk purposes. Producers reported satisfaction with livestock farming and expressed intentions to expand herd sizes. Cattle breeding was more prevalent, with Holstein and Simmental breeds being the most preferred, whereas Hair goats and Akkaraman sheep were dominant among small ruminant enterprises. Furthermore, most producers maintained systematic production records. Although the enterprises were affected by the earthquake of February 6, the reported challenges—including animal losses, structural damage to barns and shelters, disruptions in feed supply, milking difficulties, electricity outages, and workforce shortages—were relatively limited. According to the research findings, the primary expectations emphasized by the enterprises include government support, market access and price regulation, credit facilities, health services, pasture management, provision of breeding animals, stabilization of feed prices, and regulatory measures aimed at strengthening producer organizations, all of which were identified as issues requiring resolution.
