Religious and sufi elements in the Divan of Sabrî of Malatya

Religion has influenced all aspects of human life since the creation of the universe, and humankind has shaped its way of life according to religious principles. Sufism, which began during the ascetic period after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), gradually developed and became widespread over time. Especially in Anatolia and other vast regions inhabited by Muslims, the influence of religion and Sufism on human life increased significantly, and naturally, this was also reflected in literature. Poets grounded their poetry in the knowledge of religious and mystical sciences and strengthened their verses by quoting from the Qur'an and Hadiths. Religious and mystical elements, which often became the main theme of independent poems, are of great importance as they reveal the poets' familiarity with Islamic and Sufi sciences, their understanding of religion and mysticism, and the nature of religious and mystical thought in their time. In this respect, the present study examines the divan of Sabrî, who is believed to have lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in terms of its religious and mystical content. It has been observed that in Sabrî's Divan, Islam is the adopted religion, the Sunni view is the dominant religious perspective, and the Hanafi school is the foundational legal tradition. The study consists of an introduction, two main chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction provides information about Sabrî's life and literary identity, along with general information on his divan. The first chapter focuses on Sabrî's life, literary style, and works, and provides general information about his Divan. The second chapter analyzes the religious elements within the Divan under main and subheadings, including topics such as faith, worship, quotations from verses and hadiths, other religious themes and faiths, sacred places, and religious-scholarly figures. The third chapter discusses mystical elements, categorized under topics such as divine love, the lover (ʿāshiq), Sufi orders, mystical spaces and motifs, and spiritual archetypes and personalities. The findings obtained from the analysis are presented in bullet points in the conclusion, and the study ends with a bibliography.
