Evaluation of prognostic significance of pre-operative thrombocysitosis in malign overian tumours

Ovarian cancer, beside the fifth cancer in women, is the second most seen and most lethal cancer among the gynecological cancer. Ovarian cancer composes 4% of all cancer and 25% of the gynecological cancer in women. Many studies has been made to evaluate the prognostic significance of thrombocysitosis in malign tumors. Thrombocysitosis can also be seen in malign gynecological cancers. In these cases preoperative thrombocysitosis is associated with; advanced stage disease, suboptimal cytoreduction and poor survival time. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of preoperative thrombocytosis in malign ovarian tumor. The study performed in Dicle University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology between 2005 and 2009. The cases divided into two groups according to thrombocyte count. (Group1; >400, Group 2 <400). No differences found about the demographic characteristics of the cases. In group 1 cases, higher CA 125 levels, advanced stage and more ascites level found and this was statistically significant. In conclusion, the presence of preoperative thrombocysitosis leads to advanced stage disease and poor prognosis in malign ovarian tumor.
