The impact of the physical activity on the office workers musculoskeletal system: a university sample

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of physical activity on musculoskeletal disorders in individuals working as administrative staff at the central campus of Aydin Adnan Menderes University (ADU), who spend a significant part of the day at the desk due to their profession. Material and Methods: This study was carried out analytically and cross-sectionally with 252 participants working as administrative staff at the central campus of Aydin Adnan Menderes University. In this study, "Personal Information Form", "International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short" and "Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire" were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were evaluated in the SPSS 25,0 package program with a confidence interval of 95% and a significance level of 0,05. Results: In the statistical analyses made, it has been determined that the great majority of desk workers are moderately active and inactive. Physical activity level of male participants is higher than female participants. MSD is observed more in women than in men. There is a statistically negative and very weak correlation between the severe physical activity score, the upper extremity discomfort score and the total MSD score. Similarly, there is a statistically negative and very weak correlation between total physical activity score, upper and lower extremity discomfort score, and total MSD score. Conclusion: As a result of the findings obtained from the statistical analyses in the study, it was concluded that as a result of increasing the physical activity level of desk workers, the risk and complaints of musculoskeletal system disorders can be reduced at a low level.
