The effect of using dynamic geometry software in mathematics teaching on student's mathematics archievements

Abstract (EN)

This study evaluates the effects of using dynamic geometry softwares Geogebra (GGB) and Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) in the education of the 5th grade primary school lesson ''Triangles and Quadrangles'' on students' academic performance and their attitudes towards the mathematics course. Participants are 87 fifth grade students of Antalya Demre 80. Yıl Cumhuriyet Secondary School in 2017-2018 academic year. In the study, dynamic activities were prepared using GGB and GSP softwares. In test groups, these activities were used for 3 weeks whereas the mathematicscourse book was followed in the control group. The study lasted 57 hours in total and Mathematics Success Test (MST) and Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS) were applied to students before and after the practice. The data were collected using one-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test. According to the results of MST,Geogebra experimental group exhibited a considerable progress compared to the other two groups whereas Sketchpad experimental group showed a remarkable progress compared to only control group. According to MAS results, Sketchpad experimental group showed a considerable improvement in their attitudes towards mathematics course whereas no remarkable improvement was observed in the attitudes of Geogebra experimental group and control group. By using the data of this study, it has been concluded that using dynamic geometry softwares in the mathematics education improves the students' attitudes towards the mathematics and academic performance.
