Examining the relationship between mathematical mindset, responsibility value and mathematical literacy

Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of learning-based responsibility, which is a sub-dimension of students' mathematics mindset and responsibility value, on mathematics literacy. The sample of the study consisted of 235 8th grade students studying in public schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education. In order to collect the data of the study, the "Mathematics Achievement Test" created by Kükey (2013) using the questions published in 2007 was applied to the students. Students were given 40 minutes to answer the achievement test. Along with the achievement test, two other scales were administered to the students. The first scale is the 6-item Likert-type "Mathematics Mindset Scale" developed by Dweck (2000) and adapted into Turkish by Beyaztaş and Hymer (2018). Three items in the scale aim to measure the developing mindset and the other three items aim to measure the fixed mindset. The other scale is the "Responsibility for Learning Scale" developed by Yakar and Saracaloğlu (2017). The scale is a 5-point Likert type and consists of a single-factor structure consisting of 35 items. The relationships between mathematics mindset, responsibility for learning, which is a sub-dimension of responsibility value, and mathematics literacy were examined by correlation and multiple regression. The results of the analysis showed that mathematics mindset and responsibility for learning had significant effects on mathematics literacy.It was determined that developing mathematical mindset had no effect on mathematical literacy. These variables explained 9% of the total variance. Considering these results, it can be said that not only intelligence has an effect on mathematical literacy but also responsibility for learning has an effect on mathematical literacy. Similar studies can be conducted in different branches with different levels and larger samples in the future. Keywords: Mathematical literacy, responsibility, responsibility for learning, mindset
