Effect of maternal obesity over pregnancy, childbirth and neonatal outcome

Abstract (EN)
Aim Educational intervention expiremental design was used to evaluate the effect of maternal obesity created on pregnancy, birth and newborn's health. Methods/Methods This prospective type of research was carried out at the Family Medicine clinic conected to Kemalpaşa Community Health Center, by interviewing face to face with the 80 registered and pregnant women. The data were collected between october 2013/August 2014. Pregnant women who was included in the study are divided into two groups as BKİ≤27.2 -obese group and BMI ≥27.3non obese group. Research data was collected using Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, Questionnaire of Fertility, Pregnancy and Birth follow-up Form and Pregnant Follow-up Form. In the data analysis percentage distributions, chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, test were used. Data is analyzed with the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 16.00 (SPSS). Results There was no significant difference between the study and control groups for mother's age, education status, employment status and family type (p˃0.05) and both groups were found to be homogenous was significant (0.02) (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in weight gain during pregnancy (p˃0.05) gestationel age at delivery, type of delivery, duration of the labor,using induction epidural administration (p˃0.05).Altough there was no significant difference between groups for baby age (week), birth weight and height (p˃0.05), the babies of the study group weighed 700 g more than the control group newborns. Conslusion İn terms of gestational diabetes hıpertension , neonatal congenital anomalies no significant difference was found between obese and non-obese woman ( p>0.05). İn obese pregnant women cesarean rates were found to be more frequent than non-obese woman. Based on the results obtained in this study; in the presence of excess weight or obesity in pregnancy, it should be emphasized that a regular follow-up for maternal and fetal health is eesential. İn this context; all health workers, especially midwives are recommended to provide nutrition counseling support and healthy life unit for pregnant women to control weight gain during pregnancy
