Mecaz ve benzetme sanatlarının John Steinbeck'ten seçilen romanlar aracılığıyla analizi ve yabancı dil sınıflarına uygulanması

The strategies and systems utilized in education and teaching went out of date over the span of time. In this regard, it has turned out to be indispensable that different ways, strategies or exercises ought to be employed so as to remain up-to-date in education. On account of literary works' assistance in encouraging the educational process, teaching exercises have turned into a significant issue in expanding the language and scholastic skills of EFL classes. Furthermore, teaching activities both encourage the learning process of students and make learning more fun. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to teach literary devices, namely, metaphor and simile by means of several activities and discussion questions in EFL classes through selected novels of John Steinbeck. Since of their far-reaching use in literature and everyday life, simile and metaphor establish the pith of this study. Textual analysis method is applied to achieve metaphor and simile extracts. After metaphor and simile extracts are obtained, they are applied to a variety of teaching activities and discussions questions in the application part. The study is limited to John Steinbeck's two famous novels Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Through this suggested study, EFL classes are expected to advance their language proficiency along with their reading and writing skills while learning and making sense of metaphor and simile better. Since this thesis is intended to be a step for further studies, a quantitative study involving the practices with the activities and discussion questions suggested in this thesis can be carried out in real class applications.
