Media sector ownership change: The case of Turkey

Abstract (EN)

While economic investments have increased by liberalization movements at 1980s in Turkey, Turkish press has experienced a transformation. In this period, transition process from public broadcasting to media ındustry started to occur. While companies have become mass holdings, they started to be interested in the press. This interest on press, become a part of an ideological, cultural and socioeconomic system in Turkish press after 1980s. This study mainly conducted from written and published sources. On study process, literature research was made about topic initially and conceptual framework was manifested. As a part of the conceptual framework, literature search was conducted on communication, mass commucation notions with political economy theory of communication. In this study, which address changing ownership form of Turkish press after republic with critical political economy perception, a study which reveals relations with the press over relations between conglomeratings and power was conducted. At the end period of research, media ownership form which occurred with sale of the Doğan media group to Demirören media group was examined accordingly to purpose of this research. This sales process was examined and evaluated through the content analysis method on newspapers. As a result of the content analysis, concrete information about the sales process of the Doğan Media Group was obtained.In this process of change in the media, it was concluded that this sales process took place by the personal decision of Aydın Doğan, with the political and economic effects.
