The production of space: Everyday life in Medina in the Period of the Prophet Muhammed

In this thesis study based on space theory, the processes of production of space and space during the period of Muhammad are handled in terms of reflection at everyday life. Based on the periodization of space introduced by Henri Lefebvre, the assumption that, from the establishment of the city (Yesrib) until the death of Muhammad, various spaces such as historical space (as far as Hijra), sacred space and absolute space are produced one after each other in Medina is suggested and the dimension of change and transformation that this situation brings about in everyday life are examined. At the same time, in order to examine social space based on the spatial trio proposed by Lefebvre; the perceived, lived and designed dimensions of social space in Medina are also discussed in the study. This thesis, primarily based on a structural reading of "The Production of Space", is a pioneer work by virtue of the comparison and the reexamination of various –Marxist, Leninist- everyday life descriptions in a form that is convenient to the content and inside the time-space context, and is a qualitative work by virtue of the methodical framework that it takes on.
