The effects of pretreatments on pulp and paper properties of soda andmodified cooks from poplar wood (Populus euroamericana)

In this study, pulp was produced with soda and modified soda process using hybrid poplar (Populus Euramericana (I-214)) chips. In modified soda process, Anthraquinone (AQ) and Polysulfide (PS) were used. For determining the most appropriate cooking condition, a total of 6 different cooking were made with pre-hydrolysis. For pre-hydrolysis, xylanase and laccase enzymes are applied with Oxalic Acid (OA), Ethyl Alcohol (EA), Sodium Borohydride chemicals. Modified cooking condition, effects of chemicals for pre- hydrolysis and enzymes were examined on chemical, physical, and the optical properties of pulp and paper produced. Cooking liquor to chip ratio was fixed to 5/1 pulp prepared in lab-type rotary drum under ambient conditions of temperature and process water was carried out. Pulp of each cooking was placed separate polyethylene bag, moisture of pulp were identified according to TAPPI T 264 om-88 standard method and screened pulp yields were determined. For determining optimum cooking conditions, a total of 6 pieces of cooking were made. 4 of the cooking (20% NaOH, 170 ° C, 120 min.) have been selected as the cooking grid taking into account of screened yield, kappa number, viscosity values. Selected cooking conditions was alos modified with the addition of 0.1% Anthraquinone (AQ) 4% polysulfide (PS) seperately and additional 2 more cooking scenarion were added. The maximum yield of pulp acquired from KS7 (50.36%) and KS8 (50.14%) respectively. The DP of the selected pulp was 1175, 936 and 957 respectively. Control cooking condition yield 48.78% (KS4). When pre-treatment was added to Soda, Soda Anthraquinone, soda Polysulfide pulping process, lignin amount was decreased. DP values remained the same or increased compared to control. In addition to that, the physical and mechanical properties were also improved with Pre-treatment. Total yield was not changed on pulps pre-treated with oxalic acid and ethanol. However, viscosities increased. In the process with Xylanase and laccase enzymes, this situation is even more evident. Produced pulp properties was quite different than a traditional cook, and process has a higher efficiency
