Abstract (EN)
This study examined the empirical relationship between migration remittances on economic growth in eight MENA countries selectively: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Iran, Tunisia, and Oman, using panel data from 2002 to 2020. Working abroad provides people with a greater opportunity to earn a living wage. For this reason, the phenomenon of working overseas has increased significantly. In particular, workers' remittances to NEMA have augmented from $15.9 billion in 2002 to $59.6 billion in 2020. However, this did not positively impact REM and economic growth. The analysis uses a panel data technique: Cointegration tests, Pooled Mean Group / Autoregressive Distribution Lag. The cointegration result shows a long-run relationship; the PMG/ARDL model also shows a negative and long-run association between remittances and economic growth in selected MENA countries. When we apply the PMG/ARDL cross-sectional test for the short-run coefficients, all countries have, using the PMG/ARDL cross-sectional coefficient test for the short run all countries have a long-run and negative relationship among remittances and economic growth, except for Algeria and Morocco, which have a positive association between remittances and economic growth in the long run. Still, Tunisia has no significant association between remittances and economic growth. Keywords: Remittances, Economic Growth, Cointegration Test, PMG/ARDL model, MENA Countries, Panel Data.
