Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of mental arithmetic education in the academic achievements of the students who attend to the 7th grade in the electricity department of Science and Technology course. The study was conducted on the students who did not receive mental arithmetic education and mental arithmetic education in the special study training center in Yozgat province. In this study, semi-experimental method was used. In the semi-experimental study, students who did not receive mental arithmetic education and mental arithmetic education by describing the electrical unit of Science and Technology lesson for 12 hours for 6 weeks were examined whether they succeeded in a topic that they had seen for the first time. The population of the research is composed of 250 students who have mental arithmetic education in Yozgat province. The sample of this research is composed of 24 students studying in the same school in Yozgat province during the 2013-2014 academic year and achievement. The experimental group consisted of 12 students who received mental arithmetic training for 9 months and the students who attend to the 7th grade and the control group was randomly selected among the 12 students who were at the 7th grade and studied with the same group experimental group students together. In the research, quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, achievement test and interview were used to obtain data. According to the obtained data, the students in the experimental group were found to be more successful. In addition, the semi-structured interview analysis also supports quantitative findings and shows that mental arithmetic education has an effect on success in Science and Technology. The effect of mental arithmetic education on academic success can be seen in Science and Technology as well as in Social Sciences courses.
