Abstract (EN)
In recent years, traffic accidents caused more social and economic losses than natural disasters and have become a national problem in Turkey. Therefore, studies on prevention of traffic accidents on the level of cities are gaining more importance. The purpose of present study is to investigate causes of traffic accidents in Mersin and propose solutions to these problems.Mersin traffic data were obtained from Directorates of Mersin Traffic Monitoring and Registration Agency. In ınvestigation, motorcycles caused one third of accidents with the death and injury, there were more collision type of accidents than any other type and the most of the accidents were between 12:00?17:00.In this results, can be proposed building of more overpass and underpass to decrease the possibility of pedestrian and vehicle contact, positions of traffic signals should be changed order to make them visible, such as putting them on the roads rather than near the roads; and to take preventive measures to decrease the speed when drivers enter the crossroads.
