A study on the structural analysis and development of plastic greenhouses in Mersin and its provinces

Prof. Dr. Atılgan ATILGANThe aim of this study is to determine the current structural situation,characteristics and problems of commercial plastic greenhouses found in Mersinregion. For this purpose, Tarsus, Erdemli, Silifke provinces and downtown of Mersinwere selected as the research area. In the research area, the size of the greenhouseswere determined according to the statistical data concerning the size, type andcovering materials of those greenhouses, and the suggestions provided by the expertsof Ministry of Agriculture in Mersin, and selection of the greenhouse establishmentswas conducted according to stratified sampling technique. When working on thequestionnaire and conducting the observations, the researcher collaborated and paidvisits to the research area with the technical experts of Ministry of Agriculture inMersin to get right information. After that, greenhouse potentials of the region,construction types and structural conditions of the plastic greenhouses in theprovinces mentioned above were displayed. The current building technique and theformer construction style of the greenhouses were displayed through thequestionnaires given to the farmers, photographs and sketches. It is seen that 53.5%of plastic greenhouses studied on are made without project.The dealer?s 55% ofoverall plastic greenhouses were constructed by native workers. The dealer?s88.7% tendency is to make a block plastic greenhouses. The main construction ofplastic greenhouses 71.8% is made of steel bars or steel profiles. Especially, thedealers are not aware of the necessary of ventilation in that region. Finally, thestructural needs of plastic covered greenhouses, and steel construction which arecommon to the region were also determined and suggestions were given to thegreenhouse farmers.Key Words: Greenhouse, Plastic cover material, Construction
